Nocturne (2016)

LED-bulbs, programmed multi-channel relay, string

Nine large LED-bulbs are hanging on eye level in a dark space, appearing as two-dimensional discs of light.  As the spectator enters the space, the lights flash at full brightness, after which they glow dimly for 15 seconds, before fading out complitely. Once this has happened, they again flash brightly and the loop is repeated.

The installation creates – and imitates – afterimages on the spectators retinas. In a pitch black space, the dimly glowing lightbulbs are indistinguishable from the afterimages caused by the initial flash. This creates a disorienting effect of not being certain which light phenomenons observed by the spectator only appear on their retinas, and which are part of the installation.
